’s crowded ports.
Ensenada

a delightful tourist attraction offering fishing, whale watching,
wineries and outdoor sports, is also developing a maquila
industry. Its proximity to maquila centers in
Tijuana

Tecate,
Mexicali
and
Northern Sonora
make it ideal for companies looking to service existing maquilas.
Port
services
Ensenada
’s
prospects started to change in 1994 when the government privatized
the
Port
of
Ensenada
.
The port is run by Administración Portuaria Integral, and is
being developed as an alternative to the Port of Long Beach,
Calif. The intent is to add manufacturing to the region’s
economic base, to complement the existing fishing and tourism
industries.
The API has as its main objective to administer, supervise,
control and promote goods, services and activities inside the port
district. It maintains its own utilities and generates revenue
through the concessions, tariffs and other service charges.
