Overcoming Obstacles

      Mexicali has been known throughout history for its harsh climate and what its men and women have achieved in spite of it.

      During the middle part of the 20th century it was known internationally as one of the world’s largest producers of cotton. In fact, cotton is the reason Mexicali was founded. There was the advantage of an expansive and fertile valley, and water from the Colorado River .

      Mexicali is no longer the world capital of cotton, though agriculture is still an important activity. Mexicali today is known as an industrial city, particularly for maquilas. In Mexicali , unemployment is almost nonexistent, education levels are higher than the national average and its residents come from all over the world.

      “We are a state that has all the necessary infrastructure to accommodate investment projects that demand electricity, natural gas, water, a highly skilled labor force, seaports,” says Sergio Tagliapietra Nassri, state economic development director. “These elements are not provided by many states. Baja California is the nearest Mexican State to the Asia Pacific Rim, and has world-class distribution and logistics capabilities. It is interconnected through the NAFTA corridor, all the way from Canada to Central America , and it has an investment supportive government.”

      Mexicali is a pioneer in the maquiladora program and is also recognized as an important center for shared production. Currently, there are about 190 maquiladora plants operating with 55,857 employees in an environment without labor unions and low turnover. The development of the ...
