Strengthening Ties
Fox Gets Busy

Mexico will reaffirm, intensify, and diversify its
ties with the countries of Africa, Asia, and the Middle
East, including members of the Asia Pacific
Cooperation Mechanism (APEC), because of the important role
these regions play in natural resources and energy
markets, and every possible advantage will be taken of the
Free Trade Agreement with Israel, said Mexico
President Vicente Fox Quesada.
During a recent luncheon, held in
the official residence of Los Pinos, Fox told 25 invited diplomats that while
Mexico wants to strengthen commercial and investment ties, Mexico also wants
to improve its political understanding and many ties of cooperation, in addition
to making a greater effort to disseminate the enormous economic, political, and
social transformations Mexico is undergoing, so that there can be consensus and
shared positions under the most important headings on the international agenda.
He explained that with these
foreign policy objectives in mind, Mexico must take full advantage of the
political cooperation agreements it has, such as
the political consultation mechanisms with China and Korea, and the ties
established with Japan through the Mexico-Japan Century XXI Commission.
He said that Mexico's presidency of
the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation mechanism in the year 2002
will undoubtedly play a key role in the strategy to come closer to that region. This is an
