In today’s
manufacturing economy, everyone is looking for more cost
savings. As you
review your internal reports, however, don’t overlook one
important yet often misunderstood area - environmental costs.
Before your eyes glaze over at the
thought of diving into this subject, realize that even though
environmental costs tend to increase year-to-year as stricter
regulations are implemented, more and more local plants (your
neighbors) are finding savings in the tens of thousands of
dollars by simply re-analyzing how they are managing their
high-ticket wastestreams. How
are they doing it?
Unfortunately, because the issue of
environmental compliance is normally not taught as part of a
business degree, most managers are not familiar with the rules
of the game and therefore feel unprepared/unqualified
to review this area of their business.
However, there are a number of reliable local resources
that can quickly bring you up to speed - starting with your own
environmental department. If
you prefer some outside help, you can turn to your manufacturer’s
association for guidance, and there are some independent
companies that provide free, on-site consulting.
Finally, most regulatory agencies provide seminars or
consultations to help industry understand the rules that govern
them.
