With enormous
potential in natural resources and a unique historical and
cultural history,
Chiapas
is an example of development in different productive areas. Even
though its economy is still predominantly the primary sector,
industry has been increasing its presence. It has turned into one
of the main generators of
U.S.
currency in the state through more than 8,000 companies performing
44 different types of activities.
For the state government, the potential for growth is
great. Besides the strong participation of the manufacturing
industry, there’s a constant interest in other sectors such as
crafts, tourism and agro-industrial, which are a constant source
of investments and job generation. The economically active
population has shifted towards non-traditional areas in the
region.
Four years ago only 4.5 percent of the workforce was
employed in transformation industries; today the number is 7.2
percent.
