Yucatan

Putting All The Pieces Together

By: Susana Werner

Traditionally, Yucatán has been recognized for its production of textiles/apparel, furniture, processed foods and beverages and agricultural commodities.  Recently, its production of machinery and equipment has increased.

Yucatán Gov. Patricio Patrón and his administration are diversifying the state’s economy via cluster developments of high-tech companies in the aerospace, healthcare and information technology sectors. Stein Seal Company, Precision Castparts Corp., Ormco and the Information Technology Industry Council are among those forming the foundation for these cluster developments.

The Patrón administration works with the Fox administration on incentives for direct investment.  These efforts, combined with the state’s competitive operating costs, skilled, stable labor, low turnover, low levels of unionization, strategic location and excellent transportation, are expected to generate significant results.

Marcha Hacia el Sur incentives offered by the Fox administration are particularly relevant for high-tech companies. For each job created, federal incentives include up to 4,000 pesos (up to 2,000 pesos for four-month training subsidies for employees and up to 2,000 pesos for infrastructure development of facilities).
