Comprised of
the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur and Sonora;
Baja California shares its northern border with California and
Arizona, and is known as an active industrial, agricultural,
in-bond manufacturing and tourist area.
The Pacific Ocean surrounds Baja California
Sur on the west and the Gulf of California on the east. Located
in the lower part of the California peninsula, this sparsely
populated state is making major investments to develop its
exclusive resort areas concentrated in the south, and is a
producer of seafood and agricultural products. Sonora, known for
its livestock, shares its border with Arizona to the north and
Sinaloa to the south. Its industrial, fishing and agricultural
sectors offer market prospects for industrial supplies and U.S.
agribusiness interests.
A significant infrastructure development
project that involves the three states in the region is the Sea
of Cortés Project (otherwise known as Náutica Escalera). Wih an
estimated initial investment of $747 million, this project aims
to contribute to the development of the tourist industry in the
coasts of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Sinaloa
and Nayarit by attracting investment to the region. The project
includes the construction of more than 11,000 hotel rooms in a
period of 10 years, with an investment of $1.3 billion and
22,500 new marina slips with an investment of nearly $460
