How to fill out the NAFTA Certificate of
Origin, with some helpful do’s and don’ts.
Be sure to use the approved format for the
NAFTA Certificate of Origin. Mexican Customs officials will not
accept non-official documents. A copy of the official document
can be downloaded here:
https://forms.customs.gov/customsrf/getformharness
The NAFTA Certificate of Origin can be
completed in either Spanish or English, at the exporter’s
discretion.
Mexican Customs officials may request a
written translation of the certificate. If requested, the
importer should provide the translation. The exporter must fill
out the NAFTA Certificate of Origin – it cannot be filled out by
any other party. If the exporter is not the producer, then the
exporter must receive documents from the producer proving that
the product in question is of NAFTA origin. The producer can
provide either a Certificate of Origin or another form of
documentation showing that the product is of NAFTA origin.
