    The northern Mexico state of Durango is home to a new cinescope plant, the result of what will be an initial investment of $245 million by LG. Philips Displays.

    The plant currently has 842 employees with plans for as many as 2,000 workers upon full production. It manufactures 27 inch flat square, 27 inch real flat and 36 inch wide screen real flat picture tubes for domestic and international markets. Upon completion, the project will encompass more than 800,000 square feet of space in Gómez Palacio.

    “The challenge is incredible,” says Paul White, integral project manager for LG. Philips Displays. “I believe this is one of the largest investments in Mexico this year, if not the biggest, so it is an extremely challenging project. I’ve enjoyed it. The people here are great.”

    Beyond the immediate impact of the construction on the local economy, state and local officials are excited about the possibility of the project acting as a magnet for future development. LG. Philips Displays’ suppliers are being encouraged to move closer to the plant and LG. Philips Displays is also interested in developing local companies as vendors.
