      Twenty years ago seven women came together to form the Twin Plant Women’s Association in El Paso, Texas and have helped better the lives of the area’s unfortunate ever since.

      The seven stalwarts had been uprooted from their hometowns and moved to El Paso because their husbands had accepted work in the fledgling maquila industry. The women decided they could do more than lament their homesickness, they could work together to make this a better place for everyone.

      “They didn’t know anybody and they couldn’t speak the language,” says current President Eileen Obermeyer. “They got together and said there has got to be a better way.”

      Out of that commitment grew the Twin Plant Women’s Association, which is observing its 20th year in existence. Membership initially was limited to the wives of maquila plant managers, but has since been changed to include any interested women on the border...
