CRT disposal has been banned for several
years in most U.S. counties and states. Now recycling is heating
up south of the border. At least two companies recently
announced plans to establish plants to recycle compounds from
televisions, computers, cell phones and other electronics.
Retroworks de México is a partnership
between Vermont’s American Retroworks Inc. and a women’s
cooperative managed plant in the Sonora region. Meanwhile in
Monterrey, N.L., Electronic Recyclers, the largest recycler of
electronics in California, announced that it has partnered with
the Burillo Azcárraga Group of Mexico to develop ERI Mexico – a
major electronic recycling operation in the country.
According to the International Association
of Electronics Recyclers’ website, “as the production and use of
electronics products continues to increase dramatically
throughout both the business and public sectors, the challenges
of disposal and recovery of materials are becoming significant.
“In addition to aggravating the cost and availability of
landfills, electronics products contain materials that should
not be treated as common waste. Most, if not all of the
materials are recyclable and have reuse value, such as metals
