Design and manufacturing engineers in more than 50 countries have found the Injected Metal Assembly process to be a cost-effective method of producing strong joints in small component assemblies, or form terminations directly onto wire and cable. Close tolerances and part-to-part consistency inherent in the process increase productivity and quality.

Developed by Fishertech, the IMA process holds the components to be joined in a custom assembly tool containing a cavity. Molten metal, usually a zinc alloy, is injected into the cavity, where it solidifies in milliseconds. Slight shrinkage of the metal, as it cools, forms a strong mechanical lock on the components. When the tooling opens moments later, it ejects the completed assembly, free of burrs and flash and ready for use in the next production step.

The IMA process is a cost-effective replacement for time-consuming operations, such as welding and soldering, press fitting, drilling and pinning, crimping, stamping, bonding, brazing, swaging and staking. By eliminating one or more conventional assembly operations, the IMA process can often double production rates while reducing costs. Because the assembly tooling holds the components in correct relationship to one another during the process, high tolerances and part-to-part consistency is maintained over long production runs.

The IMA process is also used to form high-strength wire and cable termination assemblies in a single step, simultaneously forming a termination as it is joined to a wire or cable.

Fishertech is a division of Fisher Gauge Limited, the world leader in molten metal injection technologies.

Fisher Gauge Limited’s history began in 1942 when toolmaker and designer W.F. (Bill) Fisher started a business designing and manufacturing tools, gauges and other precision devices from the basement of his home in Peterborough , Ont. , Canada .

Since that time, the desire to be innovative in order to help customers find solutions has enabled it to become an international force in the manufacturing world.                            Today, Fisher Gauge Limited is made up of two divisions: Fishercast and Fishertech. It employs the skills of more than 600 people worldwide. They apply their expertise at five plants located in Peterborough ; Watertown , N.Y. ; and Welshpool Wales , U.K.

Fishertech clients include OEMs in the automotive, industrial control, appliance, small motor and power tool industries. With the IMA systems operating successfully in more than 50 countries, it has been able to offer assembly solutions in a wide range of industries, and have helped customers achieve valuable production improvements and cost reductions. It also offers customers comprehensive engineering services which include: application engineering, assembly design or redesign assistance, structural thermal and dynamic analyses using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), as well as prototyping and testing of all assemblies.
