FARO Technologies, Inc. recently released two of its top-selling portable coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) in a single package. The FARO Combo Package unites the Company’s Platinum Faro Arm Control Station – the original and only long-reach (4-12ft) six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) probe on the market – with the FARO Laser Tracker Si, which has a range of 230 feet. Both systems share the same CAM2 Me asure software (on the same PC or separately), so all of the data is easily accessible.

“The FARO Combo pairs the portable metrology standard – the Faro Arm – with the latest innovation in laser measurement – the FARO Tracker – so it’s really two CMMs working seamlessly as one in order to provide manufacturers the feedback they need to make their products the very best they can be,” said FARO President and CEO Simon Raab.

Also significant is the fact that the FARO Combo sells for $20,000 less than the cost of purchasing the technology separately, regardless of the Faro Arm’s size.

The Platinum Faro Arm offers .0005” accuracy and enables users to inspect, reverse engineer or perform CAD-to-Part-analysis. Its adaptable 3D measurement technology and customized zero-training Soft-Tools (with or without CAD) make it ideal for forming, molding, fabricating, casting and assembly facilities needing GD&T and SPC output. Despite being durable enough for harsh manufacturing environments, it is considerably lighter than standard portable CMMs, and includes on-board, extended-use batteries.

The FARO Laser Tracker uses an ultra-precise laser beam to allow operators to measure and inspect objects up to 230 ft. while on-site and in-process. It offers portability in measurement with high accuracy (.001”) — and faster measuring speeds and larger working envelopes — than any other optical method. With its greater angular resolution, repeatability and accuracy, it advances already-proven tracker technology with SuperADM (Super Absolute Distance Me asurement). This very high-speed distance measuring capability allows the user to measure effectively even if the laser beam has been interrupted.

“Combining these two technologies creates an immediate R.O.I.,” said FARO Hardware Product Manager Shaun Mymudes. “A manufacturer can use the FARO Laser Tracker Si for all of their large volume, 3-D scanning applications. Once those reference points are established, they can then use the Platinum Faro Arm’s six degrees of freedom to reach the hidden points that all other tracker systems miss. That means that for the first time ever, they have the ability to measure anything, any size, anywhere – simultaneously – with no line-of-sight limitations, and all on the same software interface.”

FARO’s portable CMMs enable manufacturing, engineering and quality control professionals to measure and inspect parts, machine tools and other objects on-site, in-process or wherever it’s most efficient and cost-effective. The company’s three new products – the FARO Gage, Platinum Faro Arm and FARO Laser Tracker – represent the culmination of two decades of R & D with more than 10 new pending patents for innovations in accuracy, reliability and ease of use.

“The Combo is a great example of how we cover the complete spectrum of measurement needs,” Raab said. “From large scale to detail, FARO now offers what no other company in our field can: a total measurement solution.”

FARO Technologies Inc. and its international subsidiaries design, develop and market CAM2 systems and services for manufacturers of automotive, aerospace, industrial and consumer products worldwide. Founded in 1981, FARO’s vision has been to revolutionize the world of three-dimensional (3D) measurement by providing fast and accurate 3D measurement and orientation of any object - large or small.

FARO’s product line includes portable, 3D measurement equipment, a broad range of CAD-based inspection software for portable and fixed-base coordinate measurement machines, as well as factory-level statistical process control (SPC) and manufacturing quality consulting services. The company’s products are developed internally, sold by a direct sales force and supported by a global direct sales, engineering and support organization.

FARO’s products play a key role in the worldwide trend toward CAD-based total quality management for shortened production cycles and for the reduction of scrap and rework. The company’s products are used worldwide by a variety of manufacturing companies. Currently, FARO has more than 1,800 customers including Boeing, General Motors, Johnson Controls, DaimlerChrysler, Ford, British Aerospace, Caterpillar and Honda.

Principal products include the Faro Arm, a six-degree-of-freedom articulating arm, a family of advanced CAD-based measurement and reporting software and the Control Station, an all-inclusive measurement system. FARO products provide manufacturers the freedom to measure production parts or complex assemblies right where they are built. FARO customers benefit through improved productivity and enhanced product quality because of reduced rework and scrap within the manufacturing process. Headquartered in Lake Mary , Fla. , FARO maintains European headquarters in Stuttgart , Germany . It also operates offices in France , the UK , Canada , Japan , Italy and Spain .

Software

Designed as user-friendly, yet powerful dimensional measurement packages, FARO’s CAM2 family of software meets the diverse needs of manufacturers allowing users to inspect, analyze and communicate business-critical information to management, clients and suppliers.

FARO’s market-leading inspection software can be used for CAD-to-part analysis or simple go/no-go measurements while using articulating measurement arms, CMMs and other 3D measurement instruments. FARO’s Softcheck Tools power the Control Station with easy-to-use part inspection programs. FARO prepares a SoftCheck Tool for this specific part, one that includes visual on-screen buttons to direct operators where to measure and the sequence in which they should be measured. With this system, users cannot measure the wrong point and measuring errors are eliminated.

Hardware

Whether measuring new tooling, inspecting a prototype, or reverse engineering a product, FARO’s has a time and scrap reducing solution for you. FARO’s coordinate measurement hardware touches the future of CAM2 (Computer-Aided Manufacturing Me asurement) with its point-and-click simplicity and portability. From single parts to complex assemblies, the Faro Arm’s offers high precision measurement in any manufacturing environment..

A recognized leader of dimensional quality control products worldwide, FARO is ISO 9001 certified and Guide 25 approved.

FARO now has employees throughout the world. While the design and development of FARO products still occurs at corporate headquarters, sales and distribution take place internationally. All over the United States and throughout the entire world are FARO sales engineers, support teams and FARO distributors. In the United States , these FARO jobs are located in Detroit , Mich. ; Los Angeles , Calif. ; Dallas , Texas ; Chicago , Ill. ; Charlotte , N.C. ; Columbus , Ohio ; and Seattle , Wash.
