Every
industry has its own complex vocabulary—and logistics is no
exception. To help you better understand the subject, APL
Logistics has compiled the following glossary for the industry’s
most important and/or commonly used terms.
B2B
Abbreviation for
business-to-business. A method by which companies sell and deliver
directly to other companies.
B2C
Abbreviation for
business-to-consumer. A method by which companies sell and deliver
directly to consumers.
Bar
Code
A configuration of
high-tech printed bars affixed to a product or package that
essentially becomes that product’s or package’s individual
identification. When used with bar code scanners, bar codes can
dramatically increase the accuracy and speed of product and
package handling.
Common
Carrier
A trucking company whose
services are available to any shipper at any time. These services
can be for either full trailer load (TL) shipments or
less-than-trailer load (LTL) shipments. Schneider Transportation
and Yellow Freight are good examples.
Consolidation
The act of combining two
or more smaller shipments into a single, larger shipment in order
to get better transportation rates. Although consolidation can
