While Archimedes, in the 3rd century BC, is typically credited with inventing the simple mechanical device known as the screw, his cylindrical device was not the precursor to today’s fastener. Rather a Pythagorean philosopher Archytas of Tarentum in the 5th century BC invented the wooden screw fastener. It was not until the 15th century that metal screws and nuts appear on the construction scene.

Has the standard fastener changed much since its invention over 1,600 years ago? If you consider that a screw is a simple lever, or more accurately, an inclined plane wrapped around the circumference of a cylinder, then not much has changed. The basic physics are pretty much the same. The biggest changes are the application of the screws, the materials and coating used for the screw and the drive systems required to install them.

Certainly, wooden screws are no longer used as a modern-day fastener for the obvious reasons that the metal and metal alloy fasteners will last longer, can be treated to prevent corrosion or failure and can resist stripping when a strong torque is applied. However, when metal fasteners are specified for a product, a number of choices remain before the exact fastener is determined. Over 700 categories and sub-categories exist for the material composition, thread and point and head style of the fastener: low carbon and alloy steel varieties along with coated, brass, stainless steel, aluminum and exotic metals like titanium, Inconel and hastalloy.

“It is not just the fastener’s metallic composition that our customer’s require,” says Carl Kovich, general manager, Bayou City Bolt, Houston , Texas , “we have to stock the sizes, head styles and threadings required by the industries of the 21st century.” Opened in 1962 by Louis Palombi, and still privately owned, Bayou City Bolt is one of the oldest fastener supply companies on the Gulf Coast of the United States .

“Over these past 40 years, in our nine warehouses, we have stocked extremely small screws used in eyeglasses to huge eyebolts used to anchor ships,” adds Kovich. “While it is an inventory headache, we still have some fasteners that are over 25 years old. But, when a customer calls looking for a screw or bolt to repair a very old, no-longer manufactured machine, we realize how important it was to inventory those parts for all of these years.”

A look at Bayou City Bolts extensive fastener inventory includes: all standard fasteners such as hex head bolts, square head machine bolts, carriage bolts, machine & sheet metal screws, socket cap screws (Allen head), studs, all-thread rods, washers and nuts plus turnbuckles, pins (cotter, dowel and hitch), concrete and wall anchors, wire rope fittings, U-bolts and eye bolts. Most stocked in both US standard and metric sizes from #0-80tpi x 1/4" socket cap screws to 8" dia. hex nuts.

Centrally located in Houston , Texas , Bayou City Bolt provides fasteners for a diverse clientele. From computer and electronics to construction and heavy machinery manufacturing industry, to oil, gas and maritime industries, Bayou City Bolt stocks fasteners for immediate delivery.
