In Mexicali these days the hottest news is no longer the weather. The capital city of Baja California is beginning to emerge as a technology center. The latest news is Honeywell’s construction start on a $40 million lab where it will develop technologies for commercial aircraft.

Honeywell says it will hire nearly 800 workers in the first stage and eventually reach 1,500 workers. Several hundred are expected to be Mexican engineers.

Sergio Tagliapietra Nassri, Baja California secretary of industrial development, said this project was won thanks to the reforms to the state law regarding industrial development.

He also said that the change of this law was a strategy of the state, together with the business sector to promote high technology development and design investments.

Tagliapietra said Honeywell searched the world for the place to build the first test laboratory outside of the places where it manufactures its airplanes. The plant is expected to be operational in the fourth quarter.
