manufacturers are turning to a newly-opened port of entry in
southeast
New Mexico
to avoid
crowding in
El Paso
,
Texas
.
Santa Teresa
,
N.M.
is a
developing, planned community on the U.S./Mexico border adjacent
to
El Paso
. It is at the
rim of the El Paso/Juárez metropolitan area, one of the largest
and busiest international metropolitan areas in the world.
Santa Teresa was originally envisioned by professional
golfer Lee Trevino and others as a country club suburb to
El Paso
, but has
become a major center for manufacturing and international
commerce. The Santa Teresa Port of Entry was created with the aim
of relieving current congestion at the international bridge
crossings in
El Paso
and
Juarez
.
The U.S. Customs Agency began operations here in 1993, and
in 1997 a $10 million border station was completed. Private
vehicle and commercial truck crossings have increased
substantially since the port opened and direct highway access to
Interstate 10 was completed.
Rail freight service in Santa Teresa is provided by the
Union Pacific/Southern Pacific railroad. Rail spurs currently run
