California's Wakeup Call
Article by: Staff Report
If there was "mass hypnosis" in the market over
all-electric injection molding machines, the
developing national energy crisis is a wake-up call, says Barr
Klaus, general manager of Milacron's Elektron
Technologies Business.
"You can run two or three
all-electric machines on the same amount of
electricity as one conventional machine - that
registers with molders coping with massive energy price hikes and blackouts," he adds.
"We've doubled the Elektron
business every year since its inception three
years ago, and in 2000, we expanded production capacity to meet market demand that
could reach one out of three machines. While the overall North American market has
been relatively flat, the rate of sales for
electric injection machines has been accelerating at more than 30 percent per year
since 1994."
The end of government-subsidized,
cheap electricity is bringing U.S. power costs
into parity with global pricing, doubling and tripling rates, says Klaus, and
setting market forces in motion that make energy-efficient all-electric IMMs the only...
