The
maquila industry has never had a problem finding the state of
Chihuahua. Chihuahua maquilas employ nearly one in four of all
workers in the maquila industry.
The state is home to some of the
largest manufacturing plants in the world. Plants that employ more
than 10,000 workers are not uncommon. The state is home to a Ford
Motor Company engine plant, as well as significant numbers of
Delphi Automotive components plants. The state has bountiful
resources, abundant skilled workers and three decades of
first-hand experience working in world class manufacturing
environments.
“We have it all,” says Gov.
Patricio Martínez García. “We have excellent quality of labor,
we possess important natural resources, and our men and women have
the preparation and the ability to compete with their goods and
services.”
Chihuahua lies in the Northwest
Central Plain and is bordered by the United States, to the west
and south by Sonora, to the southwest by Sinaloa, to the south by
Durango and to the east by Coahuila. Chihuahua is the biggest
state in Mexico, covering nearly 250,000 square kilometers. Its
climate is dry to semi-arid and the terrain is flat desert.
According to state estimates, there
are more than 3 million residents in the state, with Ciudad Juárez
the largest city in the state, with a population of 1.2 million.
