Sony Electrónicos de México, S.A. de C.V., a unit of Sony Corporation, has expanded its partnership with full service contract logistics provider Redwood Systems. Sony and Redwood signed a nine-year agreement.

The Redwood-Sony partnership calls for Redwood Systems to manage distribution for Sony-brand electronics – such as televisions, audio systems and stereo components – to retailers in virtually every market throughout Mexico.

To support the business, Redwood is opening a dedicated, 470,000 square feet facility in Mexico City and will step up distribution and inventory management activities at its 370,000 square feet multi-use operation in Guadalajara.

Redwood Systems has provided contract logistics for Sony Electrónicos de México since 2000. The expanded contract quadruples the amount of business Redwood Systems will handle for Sony, and includes receiving, warehousing, transportation and tracking of Sony-brand merchandise distributed to retail stores and independent resellers within Mexico.

“Redwood Systems has proven its ability to efficiently and cost-effectively serve Sony’s complex logistics needs and expanding customer base in Mexico,” says Carlos Irving Rojas, director of information systems and logistics for Sony Electrónicos de México.

“We rely on Redwood’s experience and knowledge to manage an array of details involved in order fulfillment, transportation and distribution. Our arrangement with Redwood allows us to concentrate on marketing our products and developing new business in Mexico, which is now one of our largest markets worldwide.”

Randy Tutor, vice president of Redwood Systems, said today’s sophisticated companies are recognizing the huge gains that can be realized through streamlined logistics management.

“Technology gives us the tools that allow Sony to continue actively managing its inventories, even as products move through our distribution centers,” Tutor says. “Integration of information combined with real time tracking and tracing – within both the warehousing and transportation functions – has helped our performance and has driven our expanded relationship with Sony.”

Redwood currently processes more than 400 truckloads per month for Sony. Volumes will increase substantially during the August-December peak season, and as Sony further expands its presence in Mexico. The highly customized logistics relationship includes a direct link between Redwood Systems and Sony’s internal ERP systems so that data on product flow, inventory and order fulfillment is shared real-time. In addition, Redwood manages an array of inventory-management activities, including pick and pack service, sorting, labeling and invoicing.

Redwood Systems will open a 470,000 square feet state-of-the-art distribution and warehouse facility in Mexico City. The 55-door, high security facility will support space for 120 trailers, as well as standard pick and pack, packaging, labeling and assembly services. Redwood Systems will provide sophisticated product configuration assistance and best-in-class warehouse and transportation technology through exclusive agreements with EXE and i2. Initially, more than half of the facility space will be dedicated to Sony’s high-volume customer accounts.

The opening of the Mexico City facility gives Redwood Systems more than 1 million square feet of space in Mexico, making it one of the largest 3PL operators in the country.

“Our experience in Mexico, combined with the capital backing of our Consolidated Freightways parent, gives us leverage that many multinationals need,” says Tutor. “Companies that partner with Redwood can expect fully integrated state-of-the-art technology, sophisticated infrastructure and transportation services, as well as management experience.”

Redwood Systems offers complete supply and demand-chain logistics management services for companies with large manufacturing output and consumer product exposure. Specializing in the handling of both industrial raw materials and finished consumer goods, the company provides dedicated contract warehousing, transportation management services, information-based logistics services, analytical optimization modeling and global multi-modal operations. Redwood’s logistics management services embrace the key links of supply chain management, turning logistics function into competitive advantages by reducing inventory and transaction costs, increasing efficiencies and delivering bottom-line savings.
