The limitations, costs and learning curve
associated with present RFID technology can render RFID
implementation difficult or impossible for many warehouses and
distribution centers. This was true also for bar codes in the
early stages of that technology. As there were benefits and
drawbacks to working with bar codes then, there are benefits and
drawbacks to working with RFID today. Some of the challenges are
difficult to overcome; others are not. As with most new
technologies, the implementation issues are separate from the
problems associated with the existing technology. In the long
run, the marketplace will solve most of the problems with RFID,
leaving those issues that are insurmountable to define the
limitations of the technology.
