Automotive electronics are the
fastest-growing segment of the auto parts industry, but most of
the growth is being captured by low-wage countries, according to
the latest Canadian Auto Report released by Scotia Economics.
North American built passenger vehicles now
contain nearly $2,000 of electronic equipment, up from $1,300
five years ago. The increase in electronic content is being
driven by new technology in the areas of power-train management,
safety, comfort and entertainment, as well as navigation
systems. Also driving growth is the replacement of mechanical
components with electronically controlled systems.
Examples of new automotive technologies are the replacement of
manually operated car windows, the replacement of hydraulic
power steering with electronic power steering and, in the
future, the replacement of hydraulic brakes with electronic
