Auto industry companies have another
option when it comes to determining where to locate in Mexico.
The Port of Altamira provides manufacturers
an export platform to the world — an import gateway to the NAFTA
market that provides the advantage of producing or warehousing
product within a foreign trade/in-bond zone. In addition to this
special zone, companies can develop their own terminal
operations to process cargo. In one single location, cars,
trucks, road construction and earthmoving equipment, mining
equipment, large industrial machinery, metal-fabricated products
and other types of equipment can be manufactured, and then
exported to global markets.
“Despite the conditions of the auto industry
nowadays, in Altamira we have observed that our operations
regarding automobiles have been increasing in the past years,”
says Eduardo Goode, Port Altamira marketing manager. “This is a
consequence of the distributors’ need to reach their clients,
which works in their favor due to Altamira’s strategic location,
where most of the vehicles that we receive come from Brazil and
Europe and go into our hinterland in the North and Center of
Mexico.”
Altamira is located in the southern part of
Tamaulipas on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The area, made up
of the cities of Altamira, Tampico, and Madero, has a population
of more than half a million and boasts solid economic growth on
a yearly basis.
The city is close to the U.S. border and to
numerous important industrial cities such as Monterrey, Saltillo,
San Luis Potosí, Guadalajara, León, and Mexico City. It is also
in close proximity to the important agricultural areas of the
northeast and central parts of the country.
Its location on the Gulf of Mexico makes it
an excellent platform from which to export to the United States,
South American and European markets as well as the perfect
entrance into the country for companies looking to expand into
the Mexican market. The main destinations for the majority of
export products produced within the Altamira industrial complex
are the U.S., Japanese, and South American markets.
“The port facilities in Altamira offer the
best choice for reception and dispatch of automobiles, as well
as auto parts,” says Goode. “Nowadays our operations are mostly
import, but we also export vehicles. The rail and road links
available from the port to the most important cities in México,
allow efficiency in the transportation of these products to
their final destinations. We are confident that automobile
traffic in Altamira will continue...
